Leigh's: A Luxury Fashion Haven Nestled in Breton Village
There comes a point in every girl's life when you just need a little luxury. Enter: Leigh's. Whether it's the touch of a luxe wool, breathtakingly elegant formalwear, or the impeccable service, when you enter the store, located in the ever-growing Breton Village near the corner of Breton and Burton, you can't help but feel a bit pampered. As you enter the store, the shoes, bags and accessories will be at the front of the store, as well as the checkout and makeup areas. As you venture past the beautiful Stella McCartney bags, vintage Chanel, high end boutique beauty products, and a gorgeous designer shoe collection, you'll land amongst aisles and aisles of drool-worthy, must-touch, luxury fashion. Near the back of the store is the formal wear, work wear as well as a sportswear and base-layer sections. You could easily spend a few hours just browsing the upscale selection they provide.
Because of the breadth of our offering we tend to see every age group in our store. The defining characteristic of our audience is that they love fashion and appreciate great service.
Leigh's President and co-owner, Rebecca Wierda, was kind enough to let us play dress-up for a day in her lovely store as well as answer some questions I had regarding the store's history, location, clientele, and goals for the future. Rebecca's self-described style is "classic with a twist." She has a weakness for fabulous shoes and handbags, especially those of her style icon, Victoria Beckham (great minds think alike! Check out these posts featuring Ms. Beckham, her work, and her style). We also have a shared love for Audrey Hepburn, but honestly, who doesn't? Her timeless style is a continuous source of inspiration for Rebecca. To budding fashion and style entrepreneurs, she says this, "Knowing business fundamentals is a must! Make sure you develop your business skill set so that it is equal to your passion for fashion and design."
"The store was founded by Larry Leigh, hence the name, and we just celebrated our 40th anniversary last year. When the opportunity arose to purchase the store in 2005, we jumped at it! Having been a Leigh’s customer for years, it was dream come true. We built an incredible new 13,000 sq. ft. store and started Leigh’s next chapter. What I loved most about Leigh’s, and what still sets us apart in the marketplace, is that we do have 40 years of fashion history and expertise. From designer to contemporary, we clearly love fashion and bringing the very best of each season into our store. You can get it all from us; clothing, shoes, accessories, cosmetics, an incredible overall shopping experience."
With the recent additions of West Michigan's first Free People and West Elm's stores, a Lululemon, Anthropologie, and Loft, as well as a Sur La Table and Thyme Kitchen across the street, the shopping center carries many brands and retailers that aren't available elsewhere in the metro-Grand Rapids area.
Breton Village is a fashion destination in Grand Rapids. We are excited to be a part of its transformation into a modern lifestyle shopping center and are honored to be asked to anchor the fashion category for the complex.
With our tenure in the business we have developed many fashion contacts inside the industry that are always keeping us informed of what labels are trending. We also do our own legwork: We are constantly in the marketplace looking at a range of designers, we observe street fashion, we read style blogs, we have conversations with designers and creative directors, we look at what is trending in social media and read industrial fashion periodicals like Women’s Wear Daily. We also follow the CFDA to keep up with emerging designers. Our goal is to always find what’s new and what’s next and bring it back to share with West Michigan.
As far as Leigh's selection goes outside of the realm of clothing, they are truly a one-stop-shop for all of your style needs. The model's makeup was done by the professionals in Leigh's cosmetics department, and the result was beautiful, timely, and exactly what we asked for. The service was very professional and friendly, and the environment was clean and modern.
We can complete a woman’s entire look. We also offer shoes, accessories and cosmetics. In our cosmetic area we also offer spa services: waxing, facials, eyelash extensions. We have on-site alterations and we provide complimentary gift wrapping.
The day before the photo shoot, per my usual shoot prep, I went to Leigh's and picked out the looks I wanted to feature. Normally this takes about an hour to an hour and a half, but with the immense selection and such a large store, it took about three hours! The service, as it was on shoot day, was wonderful and everybody was very helpful, even offered us refreshments and a large dressing room to use as "home base" for our things. Our photographer was/is pregnant, so it was nice to have plenty of places to rest and somewhere to store our fruit and water to snack on. Speaking of our team, we had quite an impressive crew, if I may say so myself. All four of us own our own companies, a web developer, florist, photographer, and Stephanie, our beautiful model, owns her own law firm! The whole team involved in the shoot was in awe of the amount of items in the store, and how nice everything was. It truly was an amazing day getting to style looks from such a beautiful and luxurious store. We hope you like the looks!
