Weekend Wish List: Fall Coats for Everyone

Weekend Wish List: Fall Coats for Everyone

One of my favorite things about fall is coats. There are few things in the fashion world that I love more than coats. My husband has made me move my out of season coats to the guest coat closet because there isn't any more room in the main coat closet. This makes us seem super fancy, but we really just have a closet by the front door and one by the side. I love that instead of trenches, bombers, puffers or bikers being in style and in ready supply this season, they are ALL in full throttle production this fall.

Typically the FW (Fall / Winter) runways bring back a nostalgic cut or two and feature plenty of variations of what you'd expect for that season (parkas and trenches in spring, bikers and puffers in fall), but this time around, if you can layer it, you can find plenty of them in stores and in the magazines. Unless you are rich, you really have to invest in high quality, versatile, timeless coats, so it's tough to not bleed cash when there are so many tempting pieces begging for a spot in your coat closet. This is where shopping the mass market stores like H&M, Forever 21 and Asos come in super handy because not many of us have thousands to drop on a full collection of new and might I add very inventive coats this year. These brands will lay out new items weekly sometimes and in doing so that quickly, the prices (and quality) are a bit more affordable than a $400 J.Crew cacoon or a $2000 Burberry cape. If you're like me, and you'll empty your spending allowance because you can't just pick one, check out some of the more affordable options shown.

I've listed them by type and given an affordable, mid-range and high end version of each of the top trending coats this fall. Enjoy, and have a finally-not-so-sweaty Friday!

Military

Military always tries it's best to creep into any fashion collection, season or trend but every so many years, it really has a moment in the spotlight. This season, take advantage of the wide variety of military inspired pieces available this season.

Moto

This jacket never really goes out of style, and practically everyone has one, so to stand out, look for something beyond your basic black, or play up varying textures such as suede, faux fur or shearling.

Trench

The 2016 fall trench is all about rule breaking. Long are the days of pretty, pastel waterfall trenches, and here are the days of white in winter, asymmetry and standout detailing.

Bomber

I could stand in any generally fashionable store, close my eyes, throw a dart and have about a 90% chance of hitting some kind of bomber jacket this season. For fashion girls, this little beauty has been a staple in our closets for the last few years, making its big comeback in spring 2014, but as usual, it's really blowing up the shelves of retailers everywhere a few years after it started peeking out from the behind the runway curtains. You can really play up the texture, patterns, etc. because there are SO. MANY. CHOICES.

Puffer

Puffers are really more about function than form to me sinceI live in Michigan, but finding the right fit is important if you don't want to look like Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. If you're petite, go for a high performing (Nike, Columbia or The North Face) brand in a less puffy look or else you'll end up looking likeRandy, Ralphie's brother in A Christmas Story. Trust me - I've endured enough of those jokes in my lifetime to last several more. If you're tall, take advantage of your height and look for longer puffers. If you carry your weight in your mid-section like I do, puffer vests are your best friend this time of year. They have the same affect as waist-less dresses do - since you can't see your (lack-of) waist, it leads the eye to just assume there's one under there. This is a great trick to have in your arsenal.
