Humanity Boutique: A Local Style Gem that's Making a Difference

Humanity Boutique: A Local Style Gem that's Making a Difference

In March of 2013 Humanity Boutique took up residence in the stylish shops at MoDiv in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids. Conveniently located at the intersection of Monroe Center and Division, the boutique carries modern, trendy and high quality clothing and accessories for any style. "Downtown Grand Rapids has seen significant changes in the last few years. It has an exciting energy about it, so we wanted to find a location in the heart of the city to be a part of the excitement and bring more shopping to the area," says Courtney Hunt, one of the boutique's co-owners. The shops at MoDiv are all glass walled and modern, and with neighbors such as artists, home decor stores and locally produced goods, Humanity Boutique is in great company.

I had so much fun styling these looks because Humanity Boutique has everything from flared jeans and kimonos to wedding guest attire and one-of-a kind statement pieces. The possibilities were endless. Ask the sales associate, Amanda, who was there the day I went to put the clothes for the shoot on hold. I usually pick out about four or five looks total and edit down to three, but I think I handed her half of the store. The style packed boutique also carries a wide variety of beautiful jewelry and accessories along with a small selection of plus size styles. They also have an online store where you can shop what's in-store and some online exclusives. Check it out to buy the looks from this post. They offer free shipping on orders over $75, so if you're like me and would rather shop in your pjs, you can still support a local business without having to actually get dressed. #winning

Hunt and her mother, Deborah Campbell, are a dynamite co-owner, mother-daughter team, and were so much fun to work with! They are passionate, stylish and truly good people. Courtney is beautiful, very down to earth, and so friendly, and all I can say about meeting Deborah is that she will make you want to call your mom up, give her a big hug, and then go shopping all day together! They are both definitely great people to meet, so if you're in the area stop by their boutique and say hello. Tell them Style Logic sent you!

Hunt describes the duo's inspiration for opening up shop, "We wanted to open a boutique that not only helps women look and feel beautiful, but also helps women who have been victims of abuse. We partner with organizations to eradicate ongoing violence against women around the world." They've partnered with the local organization Safe Haven Ministries, which helps women and children who are victims of domestic violence right here in Grand Rapids, MI. They also work with a global organization called the A21 Campaign, whose mission is to abolish human trafficking and violence against women. You can get involved and/or donate through both of their websites. The pair hopes to expand and open up more locations within the next five years or so, and I, for one, cannot wait to see what they come up with. Hunt's self-described style is "anything and everything in the color black," and Deborah shared her style with us by helping to style some of the accessories in the looks we did. It was such a fun day we had with them.

If you aren't familiar with the Shop Local series on Style Logic, the way the magic happens is I go in and pick out the looks, clothing, accessories, etc., and work with any vendors, so in this case, Erick, our makeup artist, to pull the looks together. Then the photographer, model and myself meet up at the boutique and do the photoshoot. We work with the shop owners to pick out photo ops and backgrounds as well as get some shots of them and their boutique. Then the fun really begins when we we strut around town with our entourage snapping brilliant pictures of our gorgeous selves. Actually, it's a bit more like a few fun, kind of tired and always hungry gals laughing, posing and having a great time trying on super cute clothes.

With Erick Gerson for makeup, Sarah Jo Taylor in front of the camera, Phrene Hoeksema behind the camera, and myself styling the looks, we had quite the dream team for this photoshoot. I hope you all have as much fun reading this post as much as I did making it.

This look consisted of a beautiful romper, a to-die-for matching necklace, bright coral shoes, a summery accessories. We found this bold, green wall on the side of the Grand Rapids Civic Theater and it complimented this look perfectly, so Sarah Jo worked it like Sarah Jo does and it turned out great!

We went a bit darker for the next look, and I love the result. The sexiness of the dress plays well with the library like setting and, thanks to Phrene's magic touch, the look takes on a soft, sexy, Adele - like vibe. Thanks to Improvisations, a MoDiv neighbor for letting us use their beautiful space for these shots. Check them out and stop by to meet Jan, she's very nice and her space is amazing.

For this last look, I just had to feature these pants. They caught my eye the second I walked into the shop. The very talented artists at The Artist's Studio, Jim Starkey and Rose Ellis, who work just outside of Humanity Boutique, were kind enough to let us take some shots with their gorgeous artwork, so a special thanks goes out to them as well.
