3 Must Have Layering Pieces That Will Easily Transition into Fall
If you are a Fall girl like me, you are counting the days to cooler weather, which brings with it sweaters, boots, scarves, and everything that is wonderful in this world. Even though it's still 80 degrees out, the temps are at least going down now, so there's hope that one day we will stop living in a giant sauna, here in Michigan. Now is also the time of year when summer clothing, accessories and shoes sales go on steroids. Retailers start trying to clear the decks to make room for the new fall arrivals, which typically hit stores early to mid August. This is tricky because you have all of the shiny, new fall trends to drool over, but anything summer is way the hell on sale, and you'd rather eat your own arm than pass on that adorable crop top at 60% off.
So what's a girl to do? Do you stock up on summer goodies for next year and the remainder of this sweltering season, or dive into the luscious fall color and texture that is quickly popping up on the shelves everywhere you look? This fall is ALL ABOUT LAYERING. Repeat after me, layers layers layers. You're probably thinking, "duh, it's fall," but these are some of the most inventive, fun and versatile layering trends we've seen in quite a few years. Maximalism turned it's crazy head this season, and we're in for some quirky and creative ways to utilize things you already have in your closet with a few new pieces incorporated. Here's your guide to late summer and early fall transition shopping. These pieces will help get you through the rest of this summer, but will fit perfectly into your fall wardrobe without breaking your budget.
The Mini Skirt
The mini-skirt suit is one of the popular looks this fall, so while it's a bit too hot for a jacket now, you can always buy that later. For the remaining warmer months, top off this beautiful skirt with a clean cut knit and your favorite lace-up sandals. This great burgundy pair will move flawlessly into fall. Once it cools down, rather than buying a matching skirt suit and jacket, buy a jacket that complements the style and shade of the skirt, but can be worn with tons of other things so that you get more use out of it. On the runways these skirts were paired with very boxy suit jackets, but I would opt for a more practical choice, unless you actually like boxy jackets. Layer the blazer or jacket you choose with a high quality blouse, and you'll get a modified, and more practical skirt suit look.
The Summery Off-The-Shoulder Top / Dress
...and skinny scarf
We all love a cute little sundress...until it's rendered useless for half of the year. Well this season, your summer dresses can live on! One of my favorite trends for this upcoming fall is turning your mini dresses into jumpers, or essentially, putting pants on underneath and wearing the dress as a tunic. I'm a huge fan of breaking traditional style rules, so I adore this idea and am so very excited for all of the layering going on this season. It feels a bit lazy to me, which I actually love. Re-imagining existing items in my closet as something with an entirely different look and feel or purpose is so exciting!
For the summer look, tie the skinny scarf (huge trend for fall) like you would a men's tie, then tuck it into the front neckline of the dress so that you only see the part around your neck. Then, rock that outfit like you're Rachel Green from the 90's and have every intention of bringing this trend back in style next decade because you're just. that. good. Also, navy and black are a definite thing here to stay, so pair it with a black satchel with buckles to really bring out the hardware on the shoes and bag.
The Slip Dress
Slip dresses were everywhere this past spring season. A classic slip dress like the below one from Theory, never really go out of style. They hide flaws, compliment almost any body type, and come in versions from crazy and sexy to chic and modern, so there's a slip dress for everyone. It's no wonder then why we have refused to give up on them when the temps threaten to drop this Fall. Throw your favorite baby-tee bodysuit or a silky blouse underneath your go-to slip dress for an instant cool weather update.
For this summer look, wear the belt (this belt is also everywhere this season) loose and asymmetrically on the hips. This look is so versatile, and could go with you from brunch to a late night concert. The Fall look takes the liquid metal metallic trend and pairs it with a bubble sleeve bodysuit that was a look featured all over the runways last February. Add a half top-knot and some killer lipstick and you're good to go.
