This Summer's Skirts and How to Wear Them: Part 1

Skirts are extremely versatile, super comfy, and so fun! Now a days, you can wear them to your own wedding or to the office. You can even wear them to go running. They are one of those fun, feminine things that we have readily available to us just because we are female. Whether you are a minimalist and like to keep your wardrobe fairly conservative or if you envision your morning walk more as a runway than on a sidewalk, there are options for you as well. Here are some of the hottest texture trends in skirts and how to wear them.

Tulle

Pair this sweet and innocent silhouette and soft color with a tank or baby tee for a go-to, always-reliable combo. If you want to have more fun with it, I've seen everything from rocker t-shirts and teeny tiny crop tops paired with this type of skirt.

Whenever you're dealing with a super sexy piece, you want to partner it with something classic and expensive looking. This will keep the outfit from looking too dominatrix or provocative. I'd recommend a black, mock-neck bodysuit or a clean cut off the shoulder top. With so much leg exposed, you'll want to cover up on top and keep the shoes classy and simple so that the skirt is still the attention-grabber.

Cut Out Midi's

You'll want to let the detail on the skirt shine, so wear a top in a neutral shade. I love the sleeves in mid-length and opposite colors on the top and shoes here. This is a very modern look, so balancing it with with a statement necklace could be interesting.

For a more daring look, grab your favorite bandeau, bralette or snug crop top and tuck in a sheer or cut out top in a similar shade to the bottom. If you're going for a more fashion forward look, it'd be fun to use a color scheme that is similar, but not exact matches, like varying shades of navy. It might also be fun to match your shoes to your bra.

Tied

For a simple and clean look (think to yourself, "What would Kate Husdon wear?"), top this ballet inspired skirt with a slim fitting long sleeve top in an organic, not-too-silky, fabric. You'll want to stay away from obviously-synthetic materials or tight tank tops that might look like a leotard. With this color, especially, a mid-height heel with a thin ankle strap would look beautiful and classic.

You can have a lot of fun with such a dynamic skirt. Play up the hippie vibe with your Birkenstocks and that cut-off festival tank top or play with texture with a tucked in, half-buttoned chambray or chiffon button-down. I'd avoid lace with this skirt to avoid looking like you're on your way to a renaissance festival.

Mesh

Mesh is a very modern, urban look, especially this season's wider, more grid-like fabrics. If you've got the waistline, a loose-fitting but soft crop-top in a similar color would look great! If you don't then opt for a simple non-spaghetti-strap tank in a lightweight cotton or linen to balance the hard look of the mesh.

For the gutsier girls, find a mesh top in either much larger, much smaller, or exactly the same size mesh (if it's just a bit off, it'll clash) in the same or opposite color with a simple bandeau bra underneath. Stay away from lace or small patterns on the bra or else the outfit will look cluttered.
