Iconic Style Remix: Pretty Woman
Pretty Woman is one of those classic Cinderella stories where I'm torn between little girl fairy tale feelings and the irritating aspect of the movie that suggests women can be bought. It has the same kind of pop culture appeal but gut-wrenching sexism that movies like Grease and countless others have. However, the red dress scene is unforgettable, as is Sandy's catsuit in Grease. The prostitute with the heart of gold getting a chance at her very own Cinderella moment is still a heartwarming scene. I love Julia Roberts and her honest portrayal of emotions through huge smiles full of teeth and snippy one liners that make you want to be her best friend.
The dress I chose is a shorter, more modern and less prom-dress-like than the original by costume designer Marilyn Vance. I've substituted the white gloves for a chic white clutch by Proenza Shouler and kept some of the original, feminine charm of the outfit by added patent bow pumps.
